CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA ; what is the way out?
Corruption can defined as an act of changing something illegally so that it is no longer in it's original states.
corruption seems to have come to stay in Nigeria. it is generally known to be a national affliction. Everybody condems it as being immoral. it is the object of attack in the churches, workplaces and everywhere, even in the market place , yet it has not being curbed.
It has defied solution, it is a canker worm that has penetrated all fabric of the society and has continued to gain ground in the geometrical progression, irrespective of the fact that the economy is on a downward trend.
All is guilty of this disease called CORRUPTION as it is from top company executives to the gateman. in government offices, even the messengers will not bring out your file for nothing. it has so permeated everywhere that anybody pointing accusing fingers to nthe other is like " The pot calling the kettle black".
Today, a hardworking civil servant is denied a promotion because he does not come from the same place with the boss. he may even promote a non-hardworking girl because he has amorous dealing with her.
Also, people who passed their exams cannot be admitted into the school all because all because they are not indigens of the state, thereby making many brilliant students to stay more years at home seeking admission into the university which is too bad.
Those in the higher institution also help water to seed off corruption. some lecturers leak examination question papers for money. some award marks to girls which they do not merit, all to accomplish their desires like having sex with them.
Our employers now demand gratification in kind or in cash from hard pressed applicants before they are given jobs, which is why when an applicant gets the job, he starts looking for extra money aside from salary.
The major cause of corruption is that we worship wealth; we worship people who have money without finding out how they get the money. The undue importance attached to money gives rises to the general craze to get rich quick. truly, money is the root of all evil.
In Nigeria, corrupt people have been given cheiftancy titles. they have been honoured by religious bodies and social clubs. serious charges of corruption have been over looked. the judiciary is on the brink of collapse as it's officers are sunk to corruption.
There is corruption during election.Government fold her hands and continue to observe this malpractice. According to a Chinese proverb,"When a fish starts to rot it starts from the head'.
Solution should start from the judiciary which is the last hope of the ordinary man. there should be prison sentence for offenders. the appointment and promotion of magistrates and judges should be done by an independent judicial commission.
The judiciary should be fearless in giving judgement, freedom of press should be strictly upheld, media homes should not be closed and media practitioners should not be compelled to disclose their source of information. A panel of prosecute corrupt officers should be established.
The war of corruption can only be won when Nigeria wins loyalty of the people. I have a part to play, so do you. Come one come all, lets say "NO" to CORRUPTION.
